Director of Innovation and Commercialization

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is overseen by Melanie Joy, PharmD, PhD, the Director of Innovation and Commercialization. 

Dr. Joy serves as the chief innovation officer of the school and as the school’s lead representative on entrepreneurship and commercialization matters both internally and externally. Her primary responsibilities include facilitating and implementing innovation and entrepreneurship activities across the Skaggs School of Pharmacy.

Specific activities include educating faculty and trainees on innovation and entrepreneurship, guidance on pathways for entrepreneurship stemming from innovations in the laboratory or clinic, serving as the school’s liaison to CU Innovations, and developing partnerships with key stakeholders to support entrepreneurship and commercialization within and outside of the school and university.

Dr. Joy works directly with investigators and CU Innovations to expand technologies toward commercialization and the clinic.

Overview of University of Colorado Processes Toward Commercialization

Step 1: Discovery

Submit detailed Invention Disclosure Form for review by CU Innovations prior to disclosure.


Step 2: Intellectual Property

File provisional patent application. File utility patent application (filed within 12 months of provisional).

Step 3: Commercialization Strategy

Helpful training offered through CU SPARK and CCTSI I-CORPS.
