Gender Affirming Care: Basics to Providing Care

This course is designed for healthcare professionals across various settings—including retail, inpatient, and outpatient clinics—who wish to enhance their understanding and skills in providing gender affirming care. With a focus on hormone therapies and other gender-affirming medications, often used off-label, this training will cover the recommended practices outlined in multiple healthcare guidelines. Participants will learn about the unique approaches to therapeutic targets and goals specific to gender affirming treatments.

As the demand for such medications continues to grow, it is crucial for healthcare providers to be well-versed in the safe administration, dispensing, and management of these treatments. This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to support transgender and non-binary individuals in their care journey, ensuring a respectful, informed, and sensitive approach.

Objectives:

  1. List the important terminology for working with transgender and/or nonbinary patients.
  2. Identify underlying discrimination and medical biases related to the receiving of treatment for transgender and/or nonbinary patients.
  3. Identify appropriate treatment options for masculinizing and feminizing gender-affirming care strategies based on goals of care.
  4. Recognize appropriate medication doses, routes of administration, side effects, and lab monitoring associated with treatment strategies.
