Statewide Protocols (SWPs) for Colorado Pharmacists

In Colorado, Senate Bill 16-135 and House Bill 18-1313 together allow for the provision of health care services by pharmacists to increase public health care access. The Colorado Pharmacist Society was instrumental in passing the authorizing laws to allow SWPs and has worked to implement them as well. SWPs are formed and approved collaboratively among the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Boards of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.

Any entity can propose a new statewide protocol for public health care services via a SWP by contacting the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy.

The most current protocols can be found on the State Board of Pharmacy website here.

Colorado Pharmacist Statewide Protocol Training: Medications for Opioid Use Disorder

Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a significant public health concern in Colorado Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention, particularly in rural and underserved ommunities where access to treatment is limited. The Colorado Pharmacist Statewide Protocol for Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) provides an opportunity to expand access to evidence-based treatment by enabling qualified pharmacists to deliver essential patient care services.

This free 8-hour training program prepares Colorado pharmacists to provide MOUD services under the statewide protocol. The program offers practical, evidence-based education on substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD) , patient assessment, trauma-informed care, MOUD pharmacotherapy, and clinical decision-making. Participants will also explore statewide protocol requirements, treatment workflows, implementation of pharmacy-based MOUD services, patient case applications, and reimbursement strategies for pharmacist-provided services.

Through this training, pharmacists will gain the knowledge and skills needed to integrate MOUD services into pharmacy practice, expand access to evidence-based treatment, and support patients in achieving their treatment and recovery goals.

This 8-hour ACPE-accredited training may be used to satisfy the substance use disorder training requirement established by the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act for DEA registration.
